Dear Members of the Greater Port Washington Business Improvement District within the Commercial Garbage Collection area,
In our vibrant waterfront community, the journey towards a thriving business environment begins with you. Each of your actions, no matter how small, builds the foundation for a stronger, more appealing business corridor. Together, we can uplift the entire community, ensuring that a rising tide truly lifts all boats. Here’s how you can contribute to this collective effort:
Garbage Disposal Guidelines within the commercial district
Collection Days
Please place your commercial garbage out for pick-up only on designated collection days. Curbside pick-up occurs from Tuesday through Saturday mornings. Note that commercial garbage will not be collected on Sundays or Mondays, including any Monday holidays. Do not leave garbage out after Saturday morning’s collection.
Volume Limits
Each property has an allowable volume of garbage based on its square footage. For instance, a small business, such as a real estate office, barber shop, or stationery store, may dispose of up to two 30-gallon cans (or equivalent) of acceptable waste, each weighing no more than 50 pounds.
Please be mindful that violations may lead to your business being ticketed and fined by the Town of North Hempstead. For more information, you can read about Port Washington Garbage Collection District’s services for commercial properties here.
Sidewalk Maintenance
Each business is responsible for keeping the sidewalks in front of their establishment clean. This includes sweeping, picking up litter, and ensuring the area is weed-free. If your business is located on a corner, please also maintain the sidewalk alongside your building. This responsibility extends to snow and ice removal as well.
Use of Black Litter Receptacles
We added new receptacles this year and power washed the older ones, but misuse of these receptacles continues. Please ensure that no commercial OR residential garbage is placed in the black litter receptacles intended for pedestrian use only. If you have a multi-use building, kindly inform residents about this rule to prevent misuse, which could result in fines.
Curbside Packaging Requirements
All commercial garbage must be properly packaged before being placed curbside. This includes flattening and tying cardboard boxes.
By working together, we can transform Main Street into an inviting and vibrant commercial district for everyone.
Warm regards,
Holly Byrne
