Your responsibilities as commercial tenants within the Port Washington Business Improvement District 

 Garbage Collection 

Commercial collection on Main Street and Port Washington Blvd. is performed by the Port Washington Garbage District. Collections are made 5 days each week, Tuesday through Saturday. Other areas are collected on the regular residential schedule. The maximum volume collected each day varies based on the type and size of business. In all cases, refuse must be placed at the curb after 5PM on the evening before a collection day.  

Holiday Schedule
There is NO REFUSE COLLECTION on the following holidays: 

    • New Year’s Day 
    • Presidents Day 
    • Memorial Day 
    • Independence Day 
    • Labor Day 
    • Columbus Day 
    • Thanksgiving Day
    • Christmas Day

Sidewalk Care 

Town of North Hempstead Code states the following:  

 48-10Cleaning sidewalks.

[Amended 4-10-1956; 8-26-1980 by L.L. No. 14-1980; 4-20-2004 by L.L. No. 2-2004] 

    1. Every owner, lessee, tenant, occupant, or other person in charge of any property within the Town shall remove snow, ice, dirt or any other object or material from any sidewalk between such property line and the curbline of all adjacent streets within four hours after snow has ceased to fall or after the deposit of any dirt, object or other material upon such sidewalks. The period between 9:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. shall not be included in computing such requirements.
    2. Every owner, lessee, tenant, occupant or other person in charge of any property within the Town shall at all times keep such sidewalk in good and safe repair and maintain the same clean, free from filth, dirt, weeds or other objects or materials.
    3. It shall be unlawful for any person to deposit, drop, throw or otherwise dispose of paper, debris or refuse of any nature whatsoever upon the sidewalks, streets, parking areas or other public places in the Town of North Hempstead.
