Members of the Port Washington Board of Directors thank outgoing directors, Bill Haagenson and Bob Weitzner for their years of service and contributions to the organization.

The Greater Port Washington Business Improvement District (BID) is proud to acknowledge and honor the remarkable service of two esteemed outgoing members of its Board of Directors, Dr. Bill Haagenson and Bob Weitzner, Mayor of Port Washington North. Their steadfast dedication and tireless efforts have greatly contributed to the growth and prosperity of the commercial district over their many years of service. Their efforts have made the district a desirable destination for both residents and visitors, fostering a sense of pride and community among all stakeholders. 

Dr. Bill Haagenson is a founding member of the BID board and has played a pivotal role in the creation of the organization. Over his nearly 30-year tenure, Bill provided a voice for the Village of Baxter Estates in fostering economic development and enhancing the commercial landscape of Greater Port Washington. His strategic connections and historical perspective have been instrumental in several successful projects, especially in the founding of the BID. 

Bill Haagenson shared his memories of his time as a founding member of the BID, “I am very happy to have had the opportunity to serve on the BID board.  From the time that Roy Smitheimer first spoke with me about the formation back in 1996 and my anticipated appointment to the board as a representative of the Village of Baxter Estates I was eager to add input to the business community.  I have always thought that if you love where you live you must get involved to help keep it thriving. The BID has always been a wonderful apolitical entity enhances and implements changes to make the Port Washington community better place for businesses, residents and visitors.  Working with the many different like-minded board members and executive directors through the years has been gratifying and enlightening.  Many people with many ideas and suggestions which have led to many improvements and additions to our unique town. I feel privileged to have been on the board since its inception and if I was able to help in the changes that have taken place then it has been time well spent.” 

Bob Weitzner, serving as Mayor of Port Washington North and a dedicated member of the BID board for nearly a decade, has been a driving force in community engagement and collaborative efforts between local government and businesses. With his contribution, the BID has seen significant improvements in beautification projects and community events. Bob’s commitment to fostering a vibrant and inclusive commercial district has been invaluable to the mission of the BID. 

Mayor Bob shares his thoughts, “It was an honor serving on the Board of the P. W. BID. It was especially gratifying to promote the BID’s mission by assisting new and existing businesses in their efforts to serve our community. I feel that being part of the BID was akin to being part of an amazing family. I wish to thank the Board for their friendship and knowledge and I will continue to do what I can to assist their efforts in the future.”  

The Greater Port Washington Business Improvement District has a longstanding tradition of supporting local businesses through various programs and initiatives. As its name states, the District encompasses greater Port Washington and extends through the unincorporated portion of Town of North Hempstead and the three villages of Port Washington North, Baxter Estates, and Manorhaven. The initiatives and programs the BID provides, designed to attract visitors and boost economic activity, include beautification projects like the holiday snowflake lights and hanging flower baskets, events and promotional activities such as Port Promenade and Restaurant Week.  With board members representing all municipalities of the District allows the BID to address the needs of the business community, ensuring a thriving commercial environment.  

As we bid farewell to Bill Haagenson and Bob Weitzner, the Greater Port Washington BID extends its deepest gratitude for their unwavering commitment and invaluable contributions. Their leadership and vision have set a high standard for future board members, and their legacy will undoubtedly inspire continued growth and prosperity in the years to come. We thank Bill and Bob for their dedicated service and wish them all the best in their future endeavors.
